SJP Statement of Solidarity with Organizing for Survivors (O4S)
Swarthmore Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) offers its formal support for Organizing for Survivors’ (O4S) Title IX Policy Demands. For far too long, survivors of sexual violence have been left unprotected and actively harmed by Swarthmore College’s policies, actions, and priorities. All students deserve to feel safe and supported on this campus. As an institution that claims responsibility for guiding and caring for its campus community in their personal and academic growth, it is Swarthmore College’s duty to immediately and completely implement O4S’ policy change demands.
In working towards Palestinian liberation, we understand that Palestinian women living in the occupied Palestinian Territories face multiple layers of violence and discrimination from both a patriarchal system and the ongoing Israeli Occupation. Patriarchy and sexual violence are issues that know no borders, yet the violence and restrictions of the Occupation only exacerbate sexual violence. Palestinian women face sexual abuse and violence not only from members of their own community but also from the Occupier, and restrictions on mobility and access to services due to the Occupation prevent many women from accessing the services they require - only 0.7% of survivors of sexual violence in Palestine seek help in these circumstances. No matter who they are or where they are from, survivors deserve to be heard and treated with dignity, and structural measures should immediately be taken to both reduce the threat of violence and provide spaces for healing.
Survivors deserve better. We all deserve better. We demand better.
In loving solidarity,
Swarthmore Students for Justice in Palestine
