Swarthmore Organizing for Survivors (O4S) Letter of Support for BDS Campaign
We, as core members of O4S, stand in solidarity with Swarthmore Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) in their call for our college to divest from seven companies that fund and participate in Israeli apartheid.
As an organization that advocates for the rights of students to attend college free of sexual harassment and assault, and with protections in place if harm does occur, we are particularly conscious of the many documented cases of Palestinian men and women who are sexually harassed and assaulted by soldiers at Israeli checkpoints and in prisons. Under occupation, this activity is normalized, and there exists a marked lack of consequences for officers who engage in this behavior.
A world free of sexual violence extends beyond Swarthmore and beyond college campuses. We recognize the unique vulnerability of populations living under occupation to harm and victimization, and we urge Swarthmore to divest its holdings in the companies SJP has named as funding military occupation. We cannot envision a world free of sexual violence until all people, including Palestinians, are treated with equal respect and dignity.
