IC Intern BDS Letter of Support

The Intercultural Center Interns of Swarthmore College stand in solidarity with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign launched by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). Last month, SJP called on Swarthmore College to divest from seven companies (Lockheed Martin, Elbit Systems, Boeing, Caterpillar, Hyundai, Bank Hapoalim, and Hewlett Packard). These companies aid the IDF in various ways, including providing technology to track Palestinians, designing weapons utilized by the IDF, and maintaining the Israeli Prison Service’s information system.

As Intercultural Center Interns, our goal is to create an inclusive and supportive campus community for all students. This cannot exclude Palestinians here at Swarthmore, in Israel-Palestine, and in the diaspora. We recognize that, as Nelson Mandela said, “our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.” Our liberation as marginalized people is tied to the liberation of Palestinian peoples everywhere. We believe as interns of the Intercultural Center we must stand up for human rights, and that Swarthmore College has a moral responsibility in standing with its Palestinian students.

We call on Swarthmore to uphold the College’s mission to instill in its students a sense of “ethical and social concern.” Swarthmore College must recognize its complicity in funding the repeated human rights abuses of the IDF. We reject the occupation of Palestinian land by Israel and we believe Swarthmore must do the same.
